Behavioural campaign for secondary schools
Only thirty percent of Limburg school students carried lighting on their bikes at night. That had to change. The Regional Platform for Road Safety Limburg (ROVL) and RMO Venlo-Venray asked DST to integrate improvement of bike lighting in the regional secondary school programmes. This resulted in Fietsverlichting laat je zien!(Show yourself!), a contest, educational programme and behavioural campaign all in one.
In cooperation with schools from northern Limburg, the Province of Limburg, the ROVL, RMO Venlo-Venray, the northern Limburg police and several Limburg city councils DST developed a strategy which seamlessly fitted in with the needs of secondary schools. Alderman Jos Teeuwen kicked off the campaign at the Valuas College in Venlo in October 2010. That month, second graders participated in a contest to design a poster for the 2011 campaign. The importance of proper bike lighting was highlighted in special lessons. After that the fourth graders took their turn, checking their schoolmates’ bike lighting in the school square as part of their school community service. If your lighting was still not in order after the lessons, contest and school checks, you were in for trouble. For the police patrolled the school routes form mid-December to check how students had improved on their lighting.
